English Online Inc.’s mission is to develop an online EAL learning system that serves the English learning needs of immigrants across Manitoba, linking learners with new and existing online EAL learning resources, EAL institutions, Immigrant Service Organizations and community groups to improve access to effective EAL learning.

eTutor Job Description
Volunteer eTutors are an integral part of English Online Inc. and play a key role in the success of language acquisition for our learners. The ideal eTutor is a person who can commit 10 hours over 5 to 10 weeks per learner.
As a volunteer eTutor, you will interact weekly with our English as Additional Language (EAL) learners to assist in the acquisition of English language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Further, the volunteer eTutor will identify with the learners their language learning focus (i.e. speaking, listening, reading, and writing) and plan the topics/themes to be used to facilitate learning. An important component of this position is to help orient learners to using the Online Learning Platform, accessing learning content and being self-directed. The volunteer eTutor will communicate with the English Online Inc. eFacilitators regarding the learner’s progress and/or challenges.
The means of communication is up to the eTutor and learner. English Online Inc. encourages using the telephone or other online tools to communicate (e-mail, webcam).
Qualifications
- Teaching/tutoring experience and/or a TESL certificate would be considered an asset (Note: for same language e-tutors experience learning with English Online is the most important asset)
- Knowledge of Adult Learning Principles
- Experience working with newcomers and immigrant community
- Demonstrated ability with the computer and Internet is extremely beneficial; experience sending and receiving e-mails and attachments is a basic requirement
- Ability to be a team player, initiate and maintain relationships as you work with a variety of people and groups
- A police record check is mandatory before a match can take place with a learner.
Responsibilities
English Only Match: This is a match where both the volunteer and learner communicate in English.
- Introduce self to learner
- Schedule time commitments
- Arrange for means of communication (e-mail, phone, Skype)
- Set learning goals and/or themes of interest for the learner
- Plan language activity/goals before interaction
- Provide feedback and guidance on language production
- Keep volunteer log of hours, learners and specifics of interaction
- Report to e-facilitators learner’s progress/challenges
- Engage in orientation and training sessions offered/suggested by English Online
- Commit 10 hours over 5 to 10 weeks.
Same Language Match:This is a match where both the volunteer and learner share the same first language. The volunteer helps the learner get oriented to the Online Learning Platform and resources.
- Introduce self to learner
- Assist learner in orienting learner to the English Online program and Online Learning Platform
- Translate/interpret communications for the learner about English Online
- Work with the English Online e-facilitators to assist with learner registration and orientation
- Show or describe how to login to the system
- Schedule time commitments
- Keep volunteer log of hours, learners and specifics of interaction
- Engage in orientation and training sessions offered/suggested by English Online
- Commit 1-2 hours per learner, as the need arises
